The Moabites originated from Lot's incestuous relationship with his daughters (Gen 19:30-38). The people of Moab often caused Israel problems through war and rebellion (cf. Num. 22-24; 31:16; Judg. 3:12-14; 2 Kings 1:1; 3:4-5). Because the Moabites disregarded Israel on their journey from Egypt and then hired Balaam to curse them, the law prohibited them from entering the assembly of the LORD (Deut. 23:3-6). Yet, at the same time, the law insisted: "Do not abhor an Edomite, for he is your brother" (Deut. 23:7).
